First, we look at the definition of Vanguard.
A group leading the way. The foremost part of an advancing army or naval force. The tip of the spear. A united and organized effort all going in the same direction. In our case, it's all of that; and more.
Then we look at QUEUE. A line or sequence of people or vehicles proceeding in the same direction. A force poised to strike, moving in the same direction, with the same objective in sight. In our case, that's as as well.
Now it gets a tad convoluted, so follow along.
First, we need to know what a double entendre means. A double-entendre is a phrase or figure of speech that could have two meanings or that could be understood in two different ways. So when most folks see vQ37, they assume ( correctly ) that it is the V6 that Nissan has been putting in the 370Z for several years.
The clan founder was a "track rat" for several years; and had heavily modified a 370Z for road racing circuits ( Watkins Glen, Summit Point, Sebring, Virginia International ) when the clan was first getting started. So he has was thinking vQ37; but with the double entendre of this:
The flip side is it means Vanguard Queue. There were forty dudes that departed for points scattered about the AOR during Desert Storm. After the cease fire; which effectively ended all offensive military type operations, it was time to go home. When we congregated back to Lajes Field, Azores ( where we had left from ) in order to head back to the world; we were missing three. Seems they had already gone home; but had flown home into Dover.
In any event, it was originally settled upon vQ37 to represent the clan tag; using the definition Vanguard Queue above was settled upon to represent the "vQ" portion; we had to keep the vQ portion of the double entendre. The 37 is to recognize the 37 that returned; but in a sort of missing man formation way that honors the three by remembering the 37. 40 - 3 = 37.
Put it all together and we have a double entendre. Fairly strange; but that's how vQ37 came about.
